Washington Possession Laws
Under RCW 69.50.4013(1), it is considered unlawful for a person to possess a controlled substance without a valid prescription or order of a practitioner while acting in the course of his or her professional practice. In Washington, this applies to all controlled substances except recreational marijuana.
Although marijuana is still considered a Schedule I controlled substance by the Drug Enforcement Administration, its recreational use has been legalized throughout the state. Adults 21 or older may possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana, 16 ounces of marijuana product in solid form and 72 ounces of marijuana product in liquid form so long as the marijuana products are legally obtained. However, possessing over 40 grams of marijuana constitutes a Class C Felony possession crime. |
